Mia de Béthune is an artist, writer, art therapy educator, and somatic therapy practitioner who is on the faculty of the New York University Graduate Art Therapy Program and the School of Visual Arts MPS Graduate Art Therapy Program. She has been teaching for 16 years. Her clinical history includes working in foster care with youth and families with high exposure to trauma. She also spent several years as art therapy support to children and families in hospice and palliative care.
Her private practice in suburban New York, is focused on integrating somatic trauma treatment and art therapy for adults and children. She is trained in Somatic Experiencing, Integral Somatic Psychology, Inner Relationship Focusing, and reiki. She has also studied Guided Drawing, Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy, and Somatic Art Therapy techniques. Her doctoral research in Expressive Arts Therapy at Lesley University was focused on the intersection of art therapy and embodied methods. As part of her coursework, Mia developed the concept for the book project – The Embodied Art Therapist and recruited Kelley Linhardt and Valeria Koutmina to form an editing team. She is former member of The Upstream Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and is currently exploring new art opportunities in New England where she lives with her husband in an old farmhouse. Her artwork engages many media and often incorporates realism with abstraction, fibers with paint, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.
